On September 23, 2021, the Law School held the first Overseas Study Experience Sharing Workshop. This experience sharing workshop invited MIAO Ruobing and JIANG Shisong, Lecturers at the School of Law, to share their experience in studying abroad. Through the workshop, the School of Law hopes to raise student’s awareness and enthusiasm for study abroad, expanding their horizons and helping them prepare for their future studies overseas.
The Workshop began with Dr. MIAO Ruobing (right)sharing his study experience at Duke University in the United States. Dr. MIAO expressed the unique learning experience in American law schools, emphasizing the link between teaching and practice. At the same time, American law schools are under great pressure. For example, law school students often need to read a large number of cases. Even though time is often tight, students should also pay attention to their physical and mental health to help with their studies Afterwards, Dr. JIANG Shisong (left) shared his study abroad experience at the University of Sant’Anna in Italy and the University of Antwerp in Belgium. When students are looking for opportunities abroad, he recommends they find a school that suits them, that they get to know their potential supervisor in advance and make sure they are a good match. The second is to concentrate on research by, for example, actively publishing articles, sharing your work in various activities and conferences, allowing you to put your research potential on display. This way, your chances of success will be much greater. Finally, Dr. JIANG suggested that everyone go out and have a look, as visiting a potential school or country to study in can broaden your experience and help in planning.
Next, Professor ZENG Wenge commented, encouraging students to consider study abroad and providing suggestions. First, look at a diversity of options when choosing a school abroad. Students often focus on select countries such as the United States, but there are also excellent options in Europe and other parts of the world. Secondly, he stressed the importance of including a broad array of activities in your application materials, including research experience, competition participation, awards, internships and more. Finally, Professor ZENG shared his own visiting experience, sharing his belief that visiting foreign countries broadens the student experience, changing their outlook and opening career options. He also emphasized the importance of English, encouraging students to work hard on their English skills and take the IELTS/TOEFL exams.
The event was presided over by LIU Chun, Deputy Secretary of the School of Law, and attended by undergraduate and graduate students from our department. Also in attendance were Professor ZENG Wenge, Associate Professor HUANG Hui, Associate Professor ZI Zhengfa, and foreign teacher Dr. David J Devlaeminck. This workshop is the first in a series of events that will be hosted by the School of Law on the topic of studying overseas as part of our ongoing efforts in internationalization.
