From January 10th to January 16th, 2020, 30 students from Chongqing University, School of Law conducted a one-week legal and cultural exchange in Singapore. The study team was led by LIU Chun, deputy party secretary, and FAN Weihong, director of the graduate office. The purpose of the event is to implement the college's mission to cultivate legal professionals with an international perspective, and to contribute to China's legal construction by cultivating high-level legal professionals.
After arrival in Singapore, students participated in a three-day theoretical study at the School of Law, National University of Singapore. During this intensive course, students studied the Singapore Cross-Border Tax Law, Private Venture Capital Law, Singapore Basic Legal System, the Singapore Solution for International Business Dispute Resolution, and Singapore's Contract Law, among others, understanding the similarities and differences between Singapore’s legal system and that of China.
Before the last lesson, Professor Simon Chesterman, Dean of the School of Law, met with all the teachers and students of the programme. The two schools exchanged gifts and took this opportunity to discuss how to deepen collaboration between the two institutions. Teachers and students visited the High Court of Singapore observing both criminal and civil trials, visited top law firms in Singapore and exchanged with their partners. On January 14th, students visited the Chinese embassy in Singapore. Consular officials expressed their support for such exchanges between China and Singapore. Students also visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Nanyang Technological University, and Singapore’s Chinatown.
This exchange is part of increasing internationalization at the School of Law, as the School and university push toward greater internationalization. It is hoped that through such events our students will have exposure to international legal talent, providing them with the exposure and ambition to pursue such opportunities in the future.
